Swollen or bleeding gums can indicate gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. Many Americans suffer from some form of this disease, often unknowingly. Early gum disease detection and periodontal treatments are key to recovery.
Therapies such as scaling to remove hardened plaque at the gum line, root planing to smooth rough areas on teeth roots (where plaque builds), and antibiotics can reverse periodontal disease and restore gum health.
We recommend frequent checkups for patients recovering from gum disease so that we can monitor success and ward off recurrence. If you notice symptoms of gum disease, like tender, red, or swollen gums, call for an appointment immediately. Learn more about gum disease and periodontal treatments in our patient library.
